Initially proposed in 2015, the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals cover all areas of sustainability.
They are intended to be met in 2030 but with only a third of the time left how much progress are we really making?
Integrum ESG measures company level support for the UNSDGs using a methodology based on the Cambridge Impact Framework.
The 17 SDGs are mapped to 6 โImpact Metricsโ that evaluates companiesโ positive impact on sustainability.
The promising news is that over the last reporting year we have seen improvements in the average awareness scores for all 6 metrics, showing that companies are taking more notice of their role in achieving the goals.
[๏ปฟImpact metrics are assigned an awareness score between 0-4 for each company in the Integrum universe, the table above shows the average awareness score per metric across over 6000 companies]
The best improvement was seen in the Car Rental & Leasing sector, which saw its average overall impact score increase from 1.68 to 1.98.
A similar story can be seen when analysing waste data, which shows an almost 400 tonnes per $1 million revenue reduction in waste that is managed unsustainably, representing a near 40% decrease.
This reflects the increasing emphasis on sustainable waste treatment and the importance of using methods such as recycling and composting as opposed to landfilling.
Although carbon emissions are down, the change has been negligible, averaging a decrease of only 34 tonnes per $1 million of revenue.
This disappointing result leaves a question mark over whether reaching the UNSDGs on schedule remains attainable.
While the UNSDGs are primarily directed at countries, companies play a critical role in achieving them, through resource allocation and influence, across societies and economies.
A huge push in focus on sustainability will be required if the changes the UNSDGs hopes to see over the next 5 years are to materialise.
